7 Signs Your Lamp Needs Rewiring

Warning signs that an older lamp's wiring has reached the end of its safe life.

Why old cord fails

Rubber and cloth insulation dries out from decades of heat cycling. Once it cracks, the conductors inside can touch, and the lamp becomes a short circuit waiting for the right moment.

The seven signs

A warm or discoloured plug; a cord that feels stiff or crunchy when you flex it; flickering when the lamp is nudged; a faint buzz from the socket; visible copper anywhere; a burning smell after twenty minutes; and breakers that trip when the lamp is plugged in. Any one of these means stop using the lamp.

What rewiring involves

A full rewire replaces cord, socket and plug together. Replacing only the plug on a lamp with sixty-year-old internal wire solves nothing and hides the real problem.

When to hand it to a professional

Anything involving heat damage, exposed conductors, tripped breakers or ladder work over a stairwell belongs on a workbench or with a technician on site. Philliparo Co. handles all of it from our Allen workshop — see our services or call (972) 798-3761.
