Twice a year is enough
Set a reminder when the clocks change. Unplug each lamp, run the cord through your fingers, and look at the plug pins for pitting or heat marks.
Wattage and heat
Check the socket label. Over-lamping an old fixture cooks the wiring inside the shade cap. Switching to LED removes almost all of that heat and is the cheapest safety upgrade available.
Placement
No cords under rugs, no cords across doorways, and nothing draped over a shade. Lamps in children's rooms should have weighted bases or be secured.
When to hand it to a professional
