LED vs Incandescent for Older Lamps

What actually changes when you convert vintage fixtures to LED, and what to watch for.

Heat and lifespan

An incandescent bulb turns most of its energy into heat, which is precisely what degrades old cloth wiring and silk shade linings. LED runs cool enough to make a genuine difference to the life of an antique fixture.

Colour temperature

For period lamps, stick to 2400K-2700K. Anything above 3000K makes warm brass and aged silk look grey and clinical.

Dimming compatibility

Old rotary and leading-edge dimmers frequently buzz with LED drivers. Either fit LED-rated lamps that state compatibility, or change the dimmer. Mixing brands on one circuit causes the flicker most people blame on the bulb.

When to hand it to a professional

Anything involving heat damage, exposed conductors, tripped breakers or ladder work over a stairwell belongs on a workbench or with a technician on site. Philliparo Co. handles all of it from our Allen workshop — see our services or call (972) 798-3761.
