How to Clean a Crystal Chandelier Safely

A method that gets chandeliers sparkling without loosening arms or damaging plating.

Before you start

Turn the circuit off at the breaker, not just the wall switch, and let the bulbs cool fully. Photograph the chandelier from several angles so you can reassemble drops in the right order.

The glove method

Wear cotton gloves, dampen one with a 1:4 isopropyl-to-distilled-water mix, and polish each drop with the damp hand followed immediately by the dry one. Never spray solution onto the fixture — it runs into sockets.

When to call someone

If arms feel loose, sockets are corroded, or the fixture is over a stairwell, it is a professional job. Chandelier falls are almost always caused by cleaning, not by wiring.

When to hand it to a professional

Anything involving heat damage, exposed conductors, tripped breakers or ladder work over a stairwell belongs on a workbench or with a technician on site. Philliparo Co. handles all of it from our Allen workshop — see our services or call (972) 798-3761.
